First-Ever Recovery Celebration Event Finds Support and Participation from Local Community
San Francisco, CA, April 25, 2016 – Center for Open Recovery (COR), is pleased to announce that The Mortar Foundation of San Francisco has become the presenting sponsor of the Bay Area’s first-of-its-kind community wellness event supporting recovery from addiction. The Road to Recovery 5K, on Sunday, May 1, 2016 will be emceed by KPIX Channel 5 News anchorman, Allen Martin and featured speaker Dennis Brown, San Francisco 49ers alum and Super Bowl XXIX Champion.
The Mortar Foundation, through their generous financial support, has chosen to stand at the forefront of this critical issue with COR to end the stigma of addiction. Historically viewed through the lens of shame and primarily treated as a crime or moral failing, addiction is in fact, a public health issue that has grown to become a crisis in our community and across the nation.
“We are grateful to partner with the Mortar Foundation as we champion long-term recovery from addiction,” said Fay Zenoff, Executive Director at Center for Open Recovery. “Their commitment to helping the least fortunate in our community to find dignity and support makes them an ideal partner in Center for Open Recovery’s efforts to end discrimination and injustice so that all people struggling with addiction may find help to recover.”
The Road to Recovery 5K makes a bold statement of support for individuals and families that have suffered from addiction, giving them a chance to honor the many paths they have found to wellness, and to inspire others to find solutions.
“The concept of ‘open recovery’ aligns with our purpose as an organization, which is to support all people to experience dignity.” said Paula Williams, CEO of the Mortar Foundation. “Recovery needs to be brought into the public conversation as the antidote to stigma so we can address our community’s addiction crisis. I’ve seen the power of recovery… there is no reason to keep it a secret.”
The event taking place on May 1, 2016 consists of a 5K course – to be walked, strolled or run – along the beach at Crissy Field to the Golden Gate Bridge and back, followed by a festival in “Recovery Village” filled with music, yoga, healthy refreshments, art projects, community booths and inspirational speakers.
Additionally, local CSN Bay Area sportscaster and former San Francisco 49er, Dennis Brown has confirmed he will be speaking at the event on May 1st. Brown played defensive end for seven seasons with the team, which included their 1995 Super Bowl XXIX Championship win. Since his retirement from the NFL, Brown has been a four-time winner of the San Francisco 49ers Community Relations Alumni Service Award, currently serves on the Players Advisory Board of the NFL Alumni Northern CA and is a sports analyst for Comcast Sports Net.
Registration for the Road to Recovery 5K is still open. All proceeds from the event will support the programs and work of Center for Open Recovery.
